33 states are no longer meeting the expectations of federal DUI guidelines, including North Carolina. WFMY news reports that in February, three main points in North Carolina’s DUI laws must be changed in order to continue to receive DOT funding for roads. Among these changes are improvements to the open container laws, eliminating loopholes for ignition interlock device installations and early release policies concerning convicted drunk drivers. If North Carolina does not update its laws according to the new guidelines signed into law by President Obama, the state faces losing over 40 million transportation dollars.
