On April 14, 2014, “Emma’s Law” was ratified in South Carolina, requiring first-time DUI offenders to install an ignition interlock device on all vehicles driven, among other provisions for repeat DUI offenders. According to Greenville Online, “Emma’s Law” also provides guidelines for those offenders who are caught driving without an ignition interlock device, and allows repeat DUI offenders to immediately receive a restricted “ignition interlock license,” in order to facilitate employment for the offender. These new guidelines are important, as they ensure the safety of all drivers on the road, restricting a drunk driver’s ability to make the choice to drive while intoxicated. Currently, the first-time DUI offender regulation only applies to convicted DUI offenders that tested with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .15 or more, or for those who refuse to provide a blood or breath sample.
