More and more U.S. states are beginning to take the problem of drinking and driving seriously through the adoption of laws that focus on stricter penalties, including mandatory ignition interlock installations. With a reported 1 percent of all DUI incidents occurring in Maine, recent legislation may be the answer to that state’s battle against the pervasive problem. In an editorial on the Press Herald, the new laws that are being implemented in Maine that focus on repeat offenders and first-time offenders are certainly set to lower those numbers, but, the question remains about whether the laws are not strict enough.
