In Wisconsin, lawmakers are preparing to introduce new legislation for harsher penalties on those who drink and drive. Many people in the state see these restrictions as necessary for public safety, especially considering the high rate of drunk driving fatalities and injuries, a large portion of which are attributed to repeat DUI offenders. USA Today reports that these new laws will focus on the criminalization of DUI first offenses, tougher penalties on multiple DUI offenses and minimum sentences for drunk drivers that cause vehicle crashes. Opponents to these laws feel that not only should current DUI laws be better enforced, but, that the harsher penalties seek to curtail personal freedoms.
