As more emphasis is placed on stopping the occurrences of DUIs across the countries, penalties are becoming stricter. These DUI penalties include fines, court costs, mandatory ignition interlock installations and more. The overall impact of a DUI is not only financial; however, there are factors that can change the life of a person who was “okay to drive.”
The criminal record and loss of freedom associated with a DUI each have a direct relation to how the convicted offender sees him or herself. Some of the most common changes include negative self-worth, including guilt, shame and depression. These emotions can be magnified, as well, by the perception of the public when it comes to a DUI conviction, and relationships with colleagues, friends and family can be changed forever.
